An ugly win is still a win...

UGA vs. TN
September 27, 2014
Sanford Stadium
Athens, GA

Tennessee is that team that gives us a close game every year no matter how each of us has been playing the rest of the season.  This one was especially un-pretty.  My various thoughts as I watched:

DISCLAIMER: I've been fighting with my allergies all day, after surviving the busiest week of my life, so this is probably a bit on the negative side.

  1. Seeing Peyton Manning in Athens wearing Tennessee orange gave me very conflicting feelings.
  2. This defense takes its time getting warmed up.  We need to be pressuring the QB right away.
  3. Our inexperience in the secondary showed on occasion today, too.
  4. What's the deal with Leonard Floyd? Since Clemson he's been rather quiet.
  5. Isaiah Makenzie is a bold kick returner. But his boldness that led to our first touchdown was a game-changer.
  6. Noticed they added one of those stupid nets to catch the field goals on the student section goal post.  That was one of the most disappointing discoveries I've made in a long time. Immediately texted the brother to ask about it, and I guess people got tired of the students throwing the other team's balls out of the stadium.  I think those people are dumb.
  7. Poor Kieth Marshall.
  8. Tennessee's kicker is legit.
  9. Marshall Morgan and Collin Barber both seemed off today.  Barber had some short punts, and some of Morgan's extra points were too close for comfort.
  10. Thank God for ESPN.  #fireVerneandGary
  11. Dear Todd Gurley, Please never leave us. Love, UGA fans everywhere
  12. Justin Scott-Wesley's pot suspension must have been for 4 games. Hopefully he can start next week.  Hutson Mason needs him!!
  13. Hutson Mason liked Chris Conley today. Good choice, I say. The force is strong with this one (when the quarterback makes good passes).
  14. Mason got no love from ESPN (or me) today.  Bless his heart. This was an (almost) exact quote from one of the commentators in those final seconds before halftime: "Well really your only chance here is to lob it to the endzone, but the question is can Mason even get it to the endzone?" Answer: probably not.  Listen, I'm sure he's a great guy, and I want to give him credit for the handful of really good plays he's had for us.  But overall, he's not our best quarterback.  He can get the job done in games like this, because he can rely on short passes to our top receivers or screen passes to Gurley.  But in situations against better teams with stellar run defenses, or when we're working with our two-minute offense, I have zero confidence in him getting the job done.  I mean, we couldn't even convert on a third down until deep in the fourth quarter, even with Gurley/Makenzie/Michel/Chubb.  He did throw a good block for Gurley today, though, so if Bobo decides to go with Ramsey in the future, Mason could stay in the mix as Maxey's backup.
  15. One of the positives to having Mason as QB is that we are a much less balanced team, so Gurley is getting lots of carries. Bring on the Heisman.

Obviously all that time running track in Europe came in handy. His hurdling form was on point today.
